Observation Error Modeling and Enkf Osses Examining the Impact of Spatial and Temporal Resolutions and Errors of Phased-array Radar

چکیده
The S-band Phased Array Radar (PAR) at the National Weather Radar Testbed (NWRT) in Norman, Oklahoma can adaptively scan multiple regions of interest and provide rapidly updated weather observations by electronically beam steering. This capability allows providing fast updates of weather information with high statistical accuracy with scanning strategy termed beam multiplexing ([Yu et al., 2007]). Since PAR has wider beams (∼ 2◦) than that of the operational WSR-88D (∼ 1◦), PAR has lower spatial resolutions at far ranges.

P2.17 Impact of Spatial Over-sampling by Phase-Array Radar on Convective-Storm Analysis using Ensemble Kalman Filter and Simulated Data
1The phased-array radar (PAR) of the National Weather Radar Testbed (NWRT) in Norman, Oklahoma represents a paradigm shift for weather radar observations. Through beam multiplexing (Yu et al. 2007), increased measurement accuracy can be achieved without increasing volume scan time. Alternatively, at the same measurement accuracy, more independent samples can be collected within a given time, al...
متن کاملError modeling of simulated reflectivity observations for ensemble Kalman filter assimilation of convective storms
[1] The impact of two different ways of modeling errors in simulated radar reflectivity data for observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) with an ensemble Kalman filter is investigated. An error model different from the one used in earlier studies is introduced, and it specifies relative Gaussian-distributed errors in the linear domain of the equivalent radar reflectivity factor. This mo...
متن کامل4a.3 Studies of Phased-array Scan Strategies for Radar Data Assimilation
1. INTRODUCTION * Sponsored by multi-government agencies and especially by the US Navy, a phased-array weather radar has been constructed at NSSL Norman Oklahoma. This establishes the first National Weather Radar Testbed (NWRT) equipped with the solid-state phased-array antenna (Forsyth et al. 2005). One of the important and yet very challenging research goals at NWRT is to optimally design and...
متن کاملPerformance of Target Detection in Phased-MIMO Radars
In this paper, the problem of target detection in phased-MIMO radars is considered and target detection performance of phased-MIMO radars is compared with MIMO and phased-array radars. Phased-MIMO radars combine advantages of the MIMO and phased-array radars. In these radars, the transmit array will be partitioned into a number of subarrays that are allowed to overlap and each subarray transmit...
متن کاملEvaluating the deformation monitoring capability of a ground based SAR system with MIMO antenna
By increasing the applicability of ground-based SAR (GBSAR) systems in geoscience and remote sensing, the development and evaluation of new systems have gained attention. GBSAR systems can be utilized for monitoring areas that are hard to or cannot be seen by the airborne or spaceborne systems. Furthermore, they have better spatial and temporal resolutions and are cost-effective and easy to imp...
